Apple of my Pie Oatmeal

We all love a cup of hot tea and a bowl of hearty oatmeal for breakfast.  I mean, is there any better way to start the day?  Well guess what, now there is!  How about combining those two loves in to one super breakfast!

 

The premise of this recipe is very simple, instead of using the water called for by most oatmeal recipes, use your steeped tea instead!

 

For the purposes of this recipe, I used Apple of my Pie rooibos tea, because apple and cinnamon are just the perfect pairing for oatmeal in my opinion.

 

I steeped my tea overnight to get as much flavour as possible, but you could get away with a much shorter steep time if needed be.

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Steel Cut Oat Blend (I used Rogers)

  • 2 cups steeped Apple of my Pie tea

  • 1 cup milk (or milk substitute)

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

  • 3 tsp cinnamon (and more for garnish)

  • 1 granny smith apple - peeled and chopped

 

 

DIRECTIONS

  • Add oats, cinnamon, brown sugar and cut up apple pieces to a small saucepan.

  • Pour in milk and steeped Apple of my Pie tea.

  • Bring to a boil on a stove top.

  • Reduce heat and cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

 

Yields: 3 servings
